To Shred On-Site or Take Away? That is the Question!

Welcome to 2024!

It is the most technologically-advanced time in the history of the world. Communication is lightning fast – thoughts are shared in milliseconds and communication is captured and stored in perpetuity.

Unfortunately, it is also the most dangerous, challenging time we have ever faced in terms of data breaches, hacks, ransomware, cybersecurity threats, etc.

Cruising the internet, disposing of confidential files, sending DMs and texts all pose varying levels of threat to businesses, institutions, and individuals. Even something as simple as discarding paper documents can present a huge danger if not disposed of securely.

As a long-time veteran in the industry, UltraShred Technologies has been intentional in its decision to provide customers with the highest security in shredding possible through on-site, on-camera shredding. This is in place of the less-secure off-site shredding process many organizations choose to offer their clients. Why is off-site shredding pushed to clients? Simple – it’s about the money!

The equipment required to provide mobile on-site shredding is costly (the average price tag for a new shred truck is $250K). Meanwhile, a box truck used as a “collection truck” to pickup materials in whole form and “swap out bins” instead of shredding on-site ranges between $50K to $90K – a much lower investment in client security.

You get what you pay for.

Unfortunately, off-site shredding carriers pose a grave risk for customers. Many businesses do not know whether their company shreds on-site or not. They also do not realize that simply transferring materials to a provider with a promise to shred at some time in the future can be risky business. The bottom line is about LIABILITY. Transferring documents to an off-site shredder does not remove customer liability for their documents.  If there is a “spill” on the road, a data breach at the provider’s warehouse or at the plant, the owner of the documents is STILL responsible for the data breach and is legally held responsible.

Here are five key reasons to choose to witness the destruction of confidential files on camera rather than send them away to be shredded elsewhere at some time in the future…

Security: On-site shredding offers a higher level of security compared to plant-based shredding. With on-site shredding, the shredding process takes place right in front of your eyes, ensuring your sensitive documents are handled securely and confidentially.

Chain of Custody: On-site shredding provides a clear chain of custody for the documents being shredded. The customer can witness the entire process from start to finish, ensuring that their documents are handled properly and not compromised during transportation to a separate facility.

Compliance: On-site shredding helps your business comply with various data protection regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). By shredding documents on-site, your firm can demonstrate its commitment to protecting sensitive information and avoid potential legal and financial consequences.

Convenience: On-site shredding offers convenience and peace of mind. You need not worry about documents being transported in whole form to a separate facility where they are supposed to be processed – shredded, packaged, and sold to a paper broker. The shredding company will come to their location with a mobile shredding truck and shred the documents on-site at their convenience.

Peace of Mind: Opting for on-site shredding gives customers peace of mind knowing that their confidential information is being securely destroyed. They can witness the shredding process firsthand, eliminating any doubts or concerns about the security of their sensitive documents.

In its 24th year of service dedicated to secure shredding, UltraShred Technologies remains a leader in the Shredding industry by choosing to provide the utmost protection through enhanced security, chain of custody, compliance, convenience, and peace of mind for our customers. We appreciate the opportunity to offer the highest security and unmatched customer service. As you approach the new year – celebrate 2024!
